 I have had ArgoSoft Email since about 1999. On 11/21 I upgraded to .NET and I have lost several 5+ year customers since, and family is even ready to dump my email services (it is free to them). I've been working with Archie for over a week (30+ emails since 11/25), I know he is trying. However, I am out of options, so I am hopeful the community can help. I cannot find an easy way to go back to previous version either.

The main issues:
- Major performance problems (near 100% CPU)
- Reboots daily (POP sessions mysteriously stop working)
- Email rejected on accounts that clearly exist
- Email accepted on accounts that don't exist (disabled accounts)

Archie indicated that he did not expect many to use POP3.. he expected IMAP primarily, so POP3 is not optimized. All my users are POP3 - I wish I had known POP3 was not going to be a priority for support. I have disabled completely MailFilter... no change, so that is not it. We've tried two test versions of ArgoMail so far, but problems remain.

I've got a 2.4ghz DELL, with 640MB RAM, W2K Server - runs fine without ArgoMail .NET running (was fine with previous version too, the non .NET). I' down some customers now - going to guess about 30 folks now.

Is everyone else A-OK on .NET? I found out the hard way it takes less than a week of screwy email to lose 5+ year customers (even ones getting it free). I'm to the point I just want to salvage it for my email, at least. Or, say.....

Uncle.

jknust,

Hi, I am going to try to see if we can help resolve this issue. I installed the .NET version two nights ago and on my System, it appears to be running faster that of the Win32 version.   And I too use POP3 and not IMAP. I have noted you bugs you reported in other threads and they have been reported to Archie.

Let's start with some basic information (some of which you already posted), but bare with me a bit.

  • Server:   2.4ghz DELL, with 640MB RAM, W2K Server

    • Is this a dual processor machine?
    • Do you have the latest Service Packs and Hot Fixes installed?
  • Mail Filter Version?:
  • Which AntiVirus Product?:
  • Which SQL Server?:  SQL 2005 Express Edition    SQL 2005
  • What is the .NET Framework Version?:
  • What other Services do you run on that server (FTP, NNTP, HTTP, ETC..)?:
  • In Task Manager, when the CPU hits 100% what Process does it show using that resource (Tip: you can sort the usage from Highest to Lowest by clicking the CPU column twice):
  • Are you running any other background  applications (defrag, AV Scan, etc..):
  • ArGo .NET Config Questions:
    • SMTP Time out when Relaying (sec):
    • SMTP/POP Wait Timeout (sec):
    • DNS Time Out:
    • Do you have Cache DNS data?:
    • Do you have IMAP disabled?:

Some more questions:

Is that Windows 2000 Professional or Server?
How much disk space is available on the driver where ArGo is installed?

Thanks for the help.
  • Server:   2.4ghz DELL, with 640MB RAM, W2K Server

    • Is this a dual processor machine? NO
    • Do you have the latest Service Packs and Hot Fixes installed? YES. Post upgrade, I had to install several new patches since the machine did not previously have .NET nor SQL Server.
  • Mail Filter Version?: v4.1.121 for .NET (although, service disabled - to eliminate variables)
  • Which AntiVirus Product?: F-PROT (fully disabled - to eliminate variables)
  • Which SQL Server?:  SELECT  SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition') gives 9.00.3042.00    SP2    Express Edition
  • What is the .NET Framework Version?: Under folder C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ mscorlib.dll is version 2.0.50727.832
  • What other Services do you run on that server (FTP, NNTP, HTTP, ETC..)?: Argo FTP, IIS HTTP. Other services fine... performance problems did not exist prior to upgrade, or when ArgoMail .NET is stopped.
  • In Task Manager, when the CPU hits 100% what Process does it show using that resource (Tip: you can sort the usage from Highest to Lowest by clicking the CPU column twice): Typically sqlsrvr.exe, then AGMSService.exe are two highest (or MailServerUi.ex if open). Between those, it gets up between 90 - 100% constant. There are periods, for unknown reasons, it drops back to 1 - 15% CPU. Most of the time... near 100%.
  • Are you running any other background  applications (defrag, AV Scan, etc..): No (AV fully disabled now, Defrag fully disabled now - eliminating variables)
  • ArGo .NET Config Questions:
    • SMTP Time out when Relaying (sec): 20
    • SMTP/POP Wait Timeout (sec): 90
    • DNS Time Out: 10
    • Do you have Cache DNS data?: I did previously, not anymore (one setting we tried).
    • Do you have IMAP disabled?: I did. But not anymore (Archie said .NET is IMAP optimized, not POP3, so I have been trying to switch over based on that statement)

W2K Server (in original post).

40 (fourty) GB Drive. 12 (twelve) GB Free.
To show some things are failing, I work all day, come home, connect to ArgoMail and see the screen shot below (then it is a long night in store).

I'm at work right now, so I can not compare things to my system.

So far two immediate differences is the amount of memory installed (I have 1 GB verses your 640 MB) and the other is that I am running the full version of SQL 2005, not the express edition.

On your IIS sites, are you running any .NET apps or is it ASP or HTML or PhP? I have IMAP disable on my system because all my users use POP3.

Based on what I am seeing I am tending to lean towards something in SQL Express.

Have you checked the messages in the outbox to see if they are being sent to legit domains.  I ask because a while ago I had my server IP as a Trusted (not the loop back address) and a bug in eWall sometime sent spoofed spam messages through and my outbox got loaded with spam to bad domains names (View Topic).

I will do some research on SQL Express Edition to see if there are tunning steps that can be done.

I have been re-thinking my original theory. SQL will peak when ArGo reads/writes and with this volume, I am thinking that this is normal. The next question is this, are all of those outbound messages to legit addresses, and not spam or bounce backs. You would have to view some of them to get an idea on that, and check to see if the senders are also from your system. I noticed in the screen shot, there was one there with 33 attempts. I would open that and do a NSLOOKUP on the domain. Check the validity of the MX record and domain name.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

Microsoft .NET Framework did not exist on this server until I installed ArgoSoft .NET - so I would say nothing else is relying on or using .NET.

As stated originally, the resource problem is CPU (not memory) - there is not severe thrashing of the drive indicating heavy swapfile use from lack of physical memory. In addition, if I stop the ArgoSoft .NET mail service, memory footprint stays almost the same, but CPU no longer at 100% and drops under 5%.

Messages in the outbox are largely to legitimate domains... and most are for delivery locally (to users on my server). I would agree, I think the problem lies in some way ArgoMail is making calls to SQL Server (nothing else uses SQL Server on my server). I have a confirmed direct correlation to 100% CPU when running ArgoMail .NET, and normal CPU when ArgoMail.NET service is stopped.

Also, you'll note in the image above the "tries" are all typically 0 (zero), so ArgoMail is sticking email in the outbox for delivery... but nothing happens. Yesterday, on 12/15, I had 700+ emails in the outbox. I checked it at about 5:00PM and there were emails from 8:00AM that were clearly legitimate (email destined for real users on my server), but they all had 0 (zero) tries and the "next try" time/date stamp had already passed.

Steve,

Thanks for more suggestions. Keep in mind this is more than just a resource issue - there is a bug of some kind. For example, if it were just resources, messages would still get delivered, albeit very slowly. I have periods where messages stay in the outbox until I restart - so it is not just "slow", something hangs.

Further, I do not think 100% CPU 24 hours a day is normal. Also, if I can get the outbox cleared out, CPU still stays at 100% - so I do not think it has anything to do with a message domain/sender/recipient/etc. being valid or not sincec there are no more left to check. Also, I would hope a single message could not bring ArgoSoft Mail to 100% CPU just due to that fact.

My hope was that upgrading to ArgoMail .NET would be an improvement; it is not. I had previously used the older version, since somewhere around 1999, and never had throttled CPU. My email volume has also decreased since the upgrade (lost customers)... and the upgrade advertises an improvement. I went here:
http://www.argosoft.com/RootPages/M...fault.aspx

And it says:
" But, the .NET version uses more advanced database engine, and contanins 100% managed code (.NET), which make it more reliable, efficient, fast.  The difference in speed is more noticeable with IMAP and the Web interface."

So I am hoping for the "more reliable, efficient, fast" part. Since I did not previously have 100% CPU usage, I would not expect that to be normal with the upgrade.

I did a grep of one day of logs for "delivered" to get a rough count of messages... 2,313 lines with "Message has been successfully delivered to", so it seems like a good indicator... 2,313 emails in one day. Is this too much email for ArgoMail to handle?

One more item - I think that 2,000 or so emails was before Archie fixed the "disabled" account bug. I went back with MailFilter and took a screen shot from a work day before the upgrade. No more than about 100 messages total (incoming AND outgoing) for an hour. Is this too much email for ArgoMail?

Joshua,

If there are 2,313 lines in the log, it does not mean that 2,313 messages were processed. Rememeber each message uses multiple lines . That that is not as important as to figure out why so many messages are getting back logged.

I have been re-reading your postings and  looking at the SQL 2005 Express specs. You are well within the requirements and I agree that the amount of RAM is a cause.

In my case the .NET version runs much more faster than the Win32 version.

(BTW, I'm rambling random thoughts here):

For example you have a mesage that had 33 attempts...Why? The logs must reflect a reason why it was not/could not be sent.

Would it be possible for you to send me 1 days worth of logs.. My SteveT At ArGoStuff.com. Maybe something in the logs will pop out.

Do you have an internal DNS server, or do you use your ISP's for the name resolution?

Do you have any firewalls (hardware or Software) that could be slowing down the processing?

Steve,

Thanks. Logs sent. You stated "You are well within the requirements and I agree that the amount of RAM is a cause.". Don't you mean "You are well within the requirements and I agree that the amount of RAM is NOT a cause." Just trying to make sure we're on the same page.

I have internal DNS, but point to ISP DNS for ArgoMail; same config I had before upgrading to .NET version.

No hardware or software firewall hindering these ports. I use IPSec (in a fashion similar to iptables on Linux).

Given that everything started with the upgrade to ArgoMail .NET, I highly doubt it is an external issue outside of ArgoSoft/SQL/.NET and how they link up (such as a FW).

Joshua,

You are correct, I omitted the word "NOT" as in, "not the cause".. My bad.

As a troubleshooter I never rule anything out until it has been tested. I have sent you an email with a possible cause and solution. If that did not fix the out box issue please let me know and I will continue to dig deeper. I have noted your other issues and Archie is working on it.

Steve,

I did not get the email. In fact, I am getting worried and have a sinking feeling that some email is just "gone". Can you let me know when you sent it? Maybe I can see if it at least shows up in the logs.

I feel like giving up - no wonder I did not see your email. It looks like SMTP died, but not sure why? POP3 continued working. So, I was not getting any inbound email from 12/16 22:11 - 12/17 21:36.... almost 24 hours. Nothing obvious in the logs... will zip up and email to you and Archie. This is not good. Help PLEASE.

Tried the latest test version from Archie - it is much faster now. However, after getting home, I found SMTP stopped working for some unknown reason for almost all day (but no messages stacked in the outbox). Rebooting now and combing through logs - trying to use the GUI to stop the service threw an error:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Mail Server v1.0.8.3
  • Added support of STARTTLS (STLS) command for SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP relay and delivery, which will allow secure, fully encrypted connections, when possible;

Mail Server v1.0.8.2
  • Optimized delivery speed. In earlier versions each "tick" which was checking whether messages were in the outbox queue, was picking up only one message at a time. Now it will attempt to pick MaximumAllowedThreads-ActiveDelivery threads messages, which should considerably increase deliver speed;
  • Optimized SEARCH and STATUS IMAP commands. They appear to be used very extensively by Android, and (not that extensively, but still) by iPhone. Now users who use mobile phones to access their IMAP accounts will see considerable improvement;
  • Optimized STORE IMAP command. Before storing of IMAP flags was occuring one message at a time, which seemed to be fine with SQL server, but proved to be slow for SQLite... Now it happens with single SQL call.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.1
  • Fixed a bug: when using IMAP via Firefox with "When I delete a message, move it to Trash folder" option, marking messages in the trash folder was causing high CPU usage, and was taking some time, making the server pretty much non-responsive. The problem was happening only when using SQLite.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.0
  • Fixed a problem with web interface - was showing only first page of messages, and would not switch to other pages; In order to fix the web interface, mail server itself has to be updated;
  • When installint initially, was still using SQLite, even when SQL was requested;
  • There was a problem with switching from SQLite database engine to SQL server database engine: the SQL database was not being created;

ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET v1.0.7.9
  • The server no longer requires Microsoft SQL Server. If SQL server is not found, it will use SQLite engine, which does not require separate installation. If SQL server is found, then user will be prompted whether he wants to use it;
  • Made other improvements, such as, now mailbox rebuild indexes orphaned records, rather then deleting them, also added an opotion to increment UIDL validity of folder (both on the Mailbox viewer box);
  • Made minor improvements on web interface;
