What is the correct procedure to move users and program configuration to a new server?

The instructions for doing this with the non-dot-net version (previous version) are available on the Argosoft website, and are faiely simple, however I cannot find anything describing this for the dot-net version.

I was able to move my domains and users across to the dot-net version from the previous version without any great hassle (hint - run maintenance before exporting your users in the previous version, it can save a bunch of time) and have had the dot-net version running for a week. Unfortunately, the computer is a bit old and slow, so I have purchased a new computer running Windows 2008 server. I have been able to install eWall and Mail Server.Net, and everything works OK.

I then tried to use a similar method to the one described for the previous version of MSPro - stopped all services on both computers then copied all the files, folders and sub folders from the working server to the new server. On restart of the MailServer.Net program, it was unable to connect to the SQL database, and hence failed to operate correctly. I abandoned the process and am still using the older, slower server for the time being.

It seems that main problem was the MS SQL database - the rest of the files in the _users sub-folder, for example, seem to work the same way as with the previous version.

Can anyone assist with an appropriate method to achieve this? It might be a useful procedure to end up on the Argosoft site under the FAQ for the dot-net version.

Thanks for that. Is this a new addition on the Argosoft page, or was I just blind when I looked over the last few days?

I'm not sure. I passed it along to Arche and he gave me the link. To be honest I forgot to check first.. which is something I usually do before asking Archie.

I can confirm that this procedure works well. All server settings, user mailboxes and outgoing mail copied across OK. The only part that does not seem to be moved on first inspection are the per-user statistics, which is not an issue for my purposes.

I'm getting the following error when I attempt to use the databackup function:

Starting database backup
Error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the o
peration or the server is not responding.
The backup or restore was aborted.

Let's start with the basics:
What version of ArGo are you using?
What OS?
Which Database (SQLExpress or the Full SQL Server Version)?
Are you logged in as Administrator?

Hmmm, I ran the tool on my db and it did work. Did you stop the ArGo Service before trying to backup?
Do you have any other load on the SQL server?

How about an AntiVirus program.. Try disabling that and trying again.

The tool won't run unless you stop the ArGo service (it prompts you to stop the server before continuing), so yes, I did stop it.

The only other load n the SQL server is Paranoid. I've stopped the Paranoid service and disabled the virus scanner, still with the same reults.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have contacted Archie on this. This suggestion is to restart the SQL Server and try again. He/we could not figure out why it would be timing out. The rest of the backup routine is file copying.

Still no luck...

I've ended up manually copying and backing up the Databases and attaching and restoring them on the new computer.

Sorry you had to go that route. Does the backup routine work on the new computer?

Mail Server v1.0.8.3
  • Added support of STARTTLS (STLS) command for SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP relay and delivery, which will allow secure, fully encrypted connections, when possible;
11/6/2011 1:10:34 PM
Mail Server v1.0.8.2
  • Optimized delivery speed. In earlier versions each "tick" which was checking whether messages were in the outbox queue, was picking up only one message at a time. Now it will attempt to pick MaximumAllowedThreads-ActiveDelivery threads messages, which should considerably increase deliver speed;
  • Optimized SEARCH and STATUS IMAP commands. They appear to be used very extensively by Android, and (not that extensively, but still) by iPhone. Now users who use mobile phones to access their IMAP accounts will see considerable improvement;
  • Optimized STORE IMAP command. Before storing of IMAP flags was occuring one message at a time, which seemed to be fine with SQL server, but proved to be slow for SQLite... Now it happens with single SQL call.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.1
  • Fixed a bug: when using IMAP via Firefox with "When I delete a message, move it to Trash folder" option, marking messages in the trash folder was causing high CPU usage, and was taking some time, making the server pretty much non-responsive. The problem was happening only when using SQLite.
6/6/2011 9:33:36 PM
ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.0
  • Fixed a problem with web interface - was showing only first page of messages, and would not switch to other pages; In order to fix the web interface, mail server itself has to be updated;
  • When installint initially, was still using SQLite, even when SQL was requested;
  • There was a problem with switching from SQLite database engine to SQL server database engine: the SQL database was not being created;
5/23/2011 5:53:55 PM
ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET v1.0.7.9
  • The server no longer requires Microsoft SQL Server. If SQL server is not found, it will use SQLite engine, which does not require separate installation. If SQL server is found, then user will be prompted whether he wants to use it;
  • Made other improvements, such as, now mailbox rebuild indexes orphaned records, rather then deleting them, also added an opotion to increment UIDL validity of folder (both on the Mailbox viewer box);
  • Made minor improvements on web interface;
