Hi:

   Steve was very helpful in getting me oriented to this page (I couldn't find the 'Add New Topic' button because I was *viewing* a message. Argggg..)

   Anyway, Archie also discussed with me the advantages / disadvantages of using a Browser to access news, or using a NewsReader.  I'm still digesting his help.

Enviro:  An XP Pro machine with Archie's FTP Server on it, also Apache Version 2.2.10 on it, and an (uninstalled) demo copy of Argo's NewsServer from several years ago. Beside this combo-server on my local network is my development machine (also an XP Pro box). Both machines are behind a D-Link router.

My need:

   I wish to install and test the newsserver on my  'server' machine. (Apache works great already, as does the FTP server).

   So, I would like the news server to provide news services to approx 12-15 separate forums. This server will be called news.mesaeastpark.com.

   I will have to go to my DNS supplier (www.zoneedit.com) and have them translate my news.mesaeastpark.com to my URL (68.2.nnn.nnn:119) (I guess)

   Them I have to find out how to add separate forums to the server.

Am I wildly off-track here ???

Thanks for any further guidance offered !

Mel,

Setting up the ArGo News server should be pretty straight forward. Once installed run through the different configuration options.(Note I am doing this from memory, as I am not at home where my News Server resides). From there you can create any number of Newsgroups from the program menu.

On the DNS end you just have to ensure that news.mesaeastpark.com resolves to your IP address and you router/firewall sends Port 119 (the default news port) to the correct machine.

ArGo News server also allows you to restrict access to specific users or you can have your news groups accessible to everyone (anonymous users).

Steve:

Thanks for the kickstart. I'll be working on it for weekend, and I'll let you know.

The advice you provided above is excellent and thorough.

Thank you again !

Steve:

Archie's News Server works *great* now (after your help and Archie's help)

The server is set up as a private server with my restricted set of users having to (in OE) set up their Account Name and Password (in conjunction and in agreement with my server).

My only small puzzle is how to *view* the Password I gave them ? I can input a password easily -- but if I forget it, then I can't go in and look at it to refresh my memory (and my users).

Is there any way to re-peek at a password ??

Thanks for all your help !

Mel,

I keep an Excel spreadsheet with the Users Name, User ID and Password. This way if I have to reset or send them their log on credentials, I have the correct information.

I also created a boilerplate where I just file in the user information:

Here is the connection information for the [YOUR SERVER NAME HERE] News Server:

Server Name: news.YOURURLHERE.COM
Port: 119
User ID: [USER ID]
Password: [PASSWORD]

NOTE: Passwords are case sensitive.

Steve:

I guess that I'd better keep the User Name & Password too in a database

(btw, I use DBFCDX-style databases -- i.e., FoxPro-lookalikes

But, its stranges that *I* can't see the Password (as the Administrator and as the person that sets and re-sets the Password.) Hmmmm ...

Thanks again for the help,

-Mel Smith

Mel,
But the passwords are visible in the logs.

Steve:

Thanks. I'll have to save my logs but if the user can't get in for the first time, and I've forgotten to save the original pasword, maybe there's a hidden directory where the Pasword is saved ??

Mel,
I believe it is encrypted in one of the user files. That question is best answered by the developer, Archie.

Mail Server v1.0.8.3
  • Added support of STARTTLS (STLS) command for SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP relay and delivery, which will allow secure, fully encrypted connections, when possible;
11/6/2011 1:10:34 PM
Mail Server v1.0.8.2
  • Optimized delivery speed. In earlier versions each "tick" which was checking whether messages were in the outbox queue, was picking up only one message at a time. Now it will attempt to pick MaximumAllowedThreads-ActiveDelivery threads messages, which should considerably increase deliver speed;
  • Optimized SEARCH and STATUS IMAP commands. They appear to be used very extensively by Android, and (not that extensively, but still) by iPhone. Now users who use mobile phones to access their IMAP accounts will see considerable improvement;
  • Optimized STORE IMAP command. Before storing of IMAP flags was occuring one message at a time, which seemed to be fine with SQL server, but proved to be slow for SQLite... Now it happens with single SQL call.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.1
  • Fixed a bug: when using IMAP via Firefox with "When I delete a message, move it to Trash folder" option, marking messages in the trash folder was causing high CPU usage, and was taking some time, making the server pretty much non-responsive. The problem was happening only when using SQLite.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.0
  • Fixed a problem with web interface - was showing only first page of messages, and would not switch to other pages; In order to fix the web interface, mail server itself has to be updated;
  • When installint initially, was still using SQLite, even when SQL was requested;
  • There was a problem with switching from SQLite database engine to SQL server database engine: the SQL database was not being created;
5/23/2011 5:53:55 PM
ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET v1.0.7.9
  • The server no longer requires Microsoft SQL Server. If SQL server is not found, it will use SQLite engine, which does not require separate installation. If SQL server is found, then user will be prompted whether he wants to use it;
  • Made other improvements, such as, now mailbox rebuild indexes orphaned records, rather then deleting them, also added an opotion to increment UIDL validity of folder (both on the Mailbox viewer box);
  • Made minor improvements on web interface;
