Well, it looks like reverse DNS is going to force me to migrate from Mail Server Pro to Mail Server.net.  My OS is Windows 2000 server.  U-verse will only allow one reverse dns record per IP address.  Fortunately, I have 4 available to the server.  Reading about Mail Server.net, it does appear that I can assign an IP to each of the domains on the server, correct?

Any tips on migrating the accounts?

I am running both Paranoid and MailFilter by SSL.  Do these programs work with the .Net version?

If not, is there a way to set up whitelists?  My current system whitelists in two ways: 1) An approved domain list and 2) A whitelist that is built by automatically  adding the "To:" email address every time a user sends mail.  Emails that are not on one of the lists are flagged for easy filtering by end users.  Can this be implemented in the .Net version?

Thanks!

You do not need to assign a different IP address to each domain for reverse IP lookup to work.   When most servers do a reverse lookup, they are checking for the existence of the reverse record.  For example, I host 5 domains with one IP address.  There are forms of more restrictive lookups, but they are usually too aggressive and are not usually used.

I am currently have eWall 3, Paranoid 3 and Mail Filter 4.1 installed. I no longer see Paranoid and Mail Filter listed on their products list, but they still have forums on it.

The biggest tip before migrating is ensure  you have the lasted version of Pro (v1.8.9.0 or later). If you do not have it, contact Archie and he can provide a download link for it.  And like anything else, ensure you back everything up before you migrated.  You can have both servers installed on the same machine at the same time.  You just need to set one of them to different ports until you get all of your data transfered.  The time it takes depends on the speed/ram of the server, number or processes running and the site and number of domains.  So it is possible that you will have some down time.

Here is a link to the transfer FAQ from ArGoSoft. http://www.argosoft.com/rootpages/M...omPro.aspx

I know that one IP can resolve to several domains - but ATT won't or can't set that up.  Trust me, I asked.  More than once.  Tech read me the directions he had to follow - and they state one domain per IP.  This must be an ATT uverse thing - not a requirement of RFC 2317.

Thanks for the other tips!

Vince,

What I was trying to get at is that the reverse names do not have to match the domain in question.

For example the reverse lookup for Topcatcomputing.com, ArGoStuff.com, (and several others), all have the same reverse lookup: ip216-179-41-27.cust.bestweb.net.

As you can see it does not even have my domain name in it, but a reverse lookup search will validate because it exists.

Mail Server v1.0.8.3
  • Added support of STARTTLS (STLS) command for SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and SMTP relay and delivery, which will allow secure, fully encrypted connections, when possible;
11/6/2011 1:10:34 PM
Mail Server v1.0.8.2
  • Optimized delivery speed. In earlier versions each "tick" which was checking whether messages were in the outbox queue, was picking up only one message at a time. Now it will attempt to pick MaximumAllowedThreads-ActiveDelivery threads messages, which should considerably increase deliver speed;
  • Optimized SEARCH and STATUS IMAP commands. They appear to be used very extensively by Android, and (not that extensively, but still) by iPhone. Now users who use mobile phones to access their IMAP accounts will see considerable improvement;
  • Optimized STORE IMAP command. Before storing of IMAP flags was occuring one message at a time, which seemed to be fine with SQL server, but proved to be slow for SQLite... Now it happens with single SQL call.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.1
  • Fixed a bug: when using IMAP via Firefox with "When I delete a message, move it to Trash folder" option, marking messages in the trash folder was causing high CPU usage, and was taking some time, making the server pretty much non-responsive. The problem was happening only when using SQLite.

ArGoSoft Mail Server v1.0.8.0
  • Fixed a problem with web interface - was showing only first page of messages, and would not switch to other pages; In order to fix the web interface, mail server itself has to be updated;
  • When installint initially, was still using SQLite, even when SQL was requested;
  • There was a problem with switching from SQLite database engine to SQL server database engine: the SQL database was not being created;

ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET v1.0.7.9
  • The server no longer requires Microsoft SQL Server. If SQL server is not found, it will use SQLite engine, which does not require separate installation. If SQL server is found, then user will be prompted whether he wants to use it;
  • Made other improvements, such as, now mailbox rebuild indexes orphaned records, rather then deleting them, also added an opotion to increment UIDL validity of folder (both on the Mailbox viewer box);
  • Made minor improvements on web interface;
