I spoke with Archie on this matter and never came up with a workable solution.  I've been running the .NET server now for about a week ( 5 days live ) and noticed that once I added all the users and we got going, my CPU jumped around 65-90%.  I've turned alot of services off on this box and did other CPU utilization tweaks, but it just won't come down.  Here's my box specs:

P4 2.8ghz

1.5 gig Ram

Windows XP SP3

Anyone else running a rig like this and got the CPUs down?

Have you identiifed which process is causing the CUP to jump like that? I usuually watch Task Manager, and sort by CPU usage, to that the high usage items will always show at the top of the list and I can identify the process that is causing the CPU to jump.

Yes, it's usually a toss between AGMSservice.exe and MailServerUI.exe with both running 45-47% of the CPU each totalling 90+%.  Archie did tell me that outbound messages will cause the CPU to jump ( which it did ), but after all messages were cleared out of the outbox, it was still running at 90+% for a few days.  On a whim, I rebooted the mail server this morning and it's been purring like a kitten all day running around 5% CPU with the occasional jumps to 45% or so if alot of activity is going on with the mail server.

I'm pretty impressed with the .NET version so far, but it worries me that the server perks like that... my boss REALLY HATES it when the mail server is down and he always catches it first thing in the morning before he's had his coffee and I've had mine

I'll keep an eye on things, but all is looking good right now.

BTW, you don't need to run the UI unless your doing maintenance or adding/managing users. Save some resources and run the UI only when needed.

I don't know if this will work for you, but it worked on my server. I just turned off the screen logging after I noticed a correlation between high CPU useage for serveral minutes after a client had downloaded his 900+ messages in his inbox and the slow extended screen logging. After turning screen logging off the server can now handle just about any amount of message access and the processor useage is negligible.

Here-Here with Dr Fission's post - turn off the UI!

Start it up and everything seems fine; leave it a few hours and yup - the CPU is at 100%. Close it down and - hey presto - things return to sensible.

We run it up when we need it, kill it off before we close the remote session on the server. My staff now fear for their kneecaps if they leave it running!

Mail Server v1.0.5.9

Mail Server

  • Added additonal tracking of connections for SMTP and POP3: if they stay on for over 30 minutes, they are getting disconnected;
  • Fixed a problem with mailbags when they accept mail only when main server is down: in case of timeout mailbags were still treating the main server as "available" and rejecting mail;
  • Changed color coding of logs. Now red denotes only errors, delivery is green, POP3, SMTP, IMAP connections - blue;

Web Interface

  • Fixed a problem, when session timeouts were causing errors in the windows system logs;

Mail Server v1.0.5.8

Mail Server

  • Mailbags now have an option to accept mail only when specified server is down - will help to fight with spam which attempt to deliver mail bypassing the main server;
  • When delivering mail, if main exchanger returns 4xx reply (temporary problem), the server will not try other exchangers, will retry later the main exchanger;
  • Server options moved from registry to a XML file. 64 bit versions of Vista and 2008 server appear to be having access rights problems to the Windows registry, and the change will make our server more compatible with 64 bit versions;
  • Added an option to specify the number of lines on the log screen, when using the user interface. Was causing memory problems if left running for long time;
  • Fixed couple of problems, which were showing when SQL server was set up to use case sensitive SQL statements;
  • Made changes in the remoting interface to allow logging in using aliases;

Web Interface

  • Made changes to allow logging in using aliases;
  • When viewing folders, web interface now displays the name of logged in user;
