Hi:

I am running argosoft ms pro 1.8.7.6 on a windows 2003 server machine which is also running IIS to host a bunch of web sites. When our hosting provider installed the monthly microsoft patches the machine required a reboot. This is a multi-homed machine (one nic - eight addresses) and Argo had trouble starting up because it could not startup pop3, smtp, and the web mail client on the IP I am using for Argosoft (I use IP homes in argo to assign only one of the IP's for mail service). My mail server was down for 21/2 hours until I came in to work and stopped and restarted argo. I think I have a conflict with Argo starting up before possibly IIS or vice versa. I would like to change the position of where argo starts up in the services list. Has anyone done this? I know messing with the services can be dangerous but If I could say make argo startup after all other services it would be better. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Dhudson: it sounds like your network interface did not come up properly before Argo tried to start. You should also verify that you don't have a port conflict...

Can you post part of the argo log where it tried to start and failed? (there might be some information in the log)

OK.. I think I found the solution for you. You'll need to set a dependency on the argo mail server of something which happens after your network is available.... If the "IP Homes" is a service, you should be able to set a dependency on that... see the dependency tab on the services for more info....

Does that help?

Matt:

I will give it a try. I am not sure what services load last but I will try that approach. The "Ip Homes" I am referring to is in Argo (Tools/Server Options/IP Homes tab if I am not mistaken) - that is not a service. Thanks for your help.

To determine what order items are loading, check out this tool from what was SysInernals, now Microsoft:

Mail Server v1.0.5.9

Mail Server

  • Added additonal tracking of connections for SMTP and POP3: if they stay on for over 30 minutes, they are getting disconnected;
  • Fixed a problem with mailbags when they accept mail only when main server is down: in case of timeout mailbags were still treating the main server as "available" and rejecting mail;
  • Changed color coding of logs. Now red denotes only errors, delivery is green, POP3, SMTP, IMAP connections - blue;

Web Interface

  • Fixed a problem, when session timeouts were causing errors in the windows system logs;

Mail Server v1.0.5.8

Mail Server

  • Mailbags now have an option to accept mail only when specified server is down - will help to fight with spam which attempt to deliver mail bypassing the main server;
  • When delivering mail, if main exchanger returns 4xx reply (temporary problem), the server will not try other exchangers, will retry later the main exchanger;
  • Server options moved from registry to a XML file. 64 bit versions of Vista and 2008 server appear to be having access rights problems to the Windows registry, and the change will make our server more compatible with 64 bit versions;
  • Added an option to specify the number of lines on the log screen, when using the user interface. Was causing memory problems if left running for long time;
  • Fixed couple of problems, which were showing when SQL server was set up to use case sensitive SQL statements;
  • Made changes in the remoting interface to allow logging in using aliases;

Web Interface

  • Made changes to allow logging in using aliases;
  • When viewing folders, web interface now displays the name of logged in user;
