Firstly, How do I setup argosoft? to work.
551 User not local.  We don't relay using telnet?

Enivorment;
Windows XP SP3
IIS is installed with SMTP disabled.

What are the settings? or are they all different?
What info do you need from me to help you help me set this up properly?

Cheers

Westmatrix: It sounds like you have turned "authentication" on, but the user that is sending the email did not send authentication info. You cannot send to an email address that does not exist in your Argo without passing a userid/password..
I'm not sure about the "telnet" part of the message.. Can you post the part of the log for that email message communication, showing that error message?

I don't think I fully understand;
What do you need from me to get this setup?
I closed and rebooted after posting that message.

I am following these steps after installation; http://www.argostuff.com/Articles/tabid/61/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/43/Using-Telnet-to-test-your-connection.aspx
fresh install nothing entered or added.

I would like you to post the entire communication from the log that shows that connection that got the "551 user not local" that you posted in the original post. I would guess that when you tried to send the email, you did not send the userid/password for an existing email address on that server when you tried to send.

Thanks

OK.. first of all, change the web port to something other than 80, so the web server can start... I assume that you did create a domain and email addresses? When you send an email through argo, you'll need to do one of two things:

1) Send a userid/password of an existing email address (one that is defined to argo). Userid is the complete email address, example: matt@nothing.com

2) make sure that the IP address that you are sending from is in the "trusted" list, in which case no authentication should be required.

My recommendation is to always send authentication..

If you have authentication turned on, and neither the from email or the to email address are addresses that argo handles, then you have to be a "trusted" sender,or pass a userid/password when you send...

OK.. let's take a step back. It sounds like you may have most of the settings in argo correctly set. When you installed argo, did you create user accounts(email addresses?) You need to tell argo what domain(s) it handles email for, and what email addresses at those doimain(s) it handles email for. Did you do that? If you have not done that, you can't go any further.

OK. I guess I'm confused. Can you tell me what you are trying to have argo do? If you do not have user accounts defined, then you will be unable to receive mail through argo.

Exactly that, trying to setup Argo to send email from my PC for testing.
What settings do I add where.
Click on Tools / Users
Click the New user icon
What do I add here?
and so on and so on...

OK.. click on the "local users/domains" icon at the top and define what domain this server will handle, then right click in the blank pane on the right for that domain to create a user. Once you have done that (and assigned a password), then you should be able to do testing...
There are plenty of resources out on the net to tell you step by step what you have to enter to send a test email, with authentication...

Note: If you are sending an email to a user at any domain that argo handles, the email will not leave the server. it will try to deliver the email to the user at that local domain (a local domain is a domain that argo handles email for).

is this the .NET version?

Argo Mail server Plus.
What data goes in those boxes? localhost or my real email address?
What is my return and forward address?
What goes under finger information and auto responder?

What goes under these;
DNS server?
IP Home?
Local Host?
Do I tick allow relay?
Local Domains?
SMTP Authentication?

You first have to tell argo what domain it handles email for. For your testing, this could be a "non-existant" domain, but if you have argo send mail out to the internet, no one would be able to reply to your email... Then you have to add users. The username is just the name of the user, becuase it already knows what domain that email address is at. return should be filled in automatically. Forwarding is only if you want argo to forward ny email that it receives for that email address to another email address.. Autoresponder is for when you are out of the office (for instance), when you want anyone who sends you an email to get a specific message back, like "I am unavailable between x/x/x and y/y/y and will get back to you when I can".... Since this server is in "testing", I assume that it will not be receiving email from the internet at this time?

I am assuming that this argo server will become "productional" once you are done with your testing? If so, why not define the real domain that it will be handling, and the real user(s) that it will be handling?

This is exactly what I am asking for;

Argo Mail server Plus.
What data goes in those boxes? localhost or my real email address? added my real address
What is my return and forward address? added my real address
What goes under finger information and auto responder? Do I need it?

What goes under these;
DNS server? What is this IP? my pc's IP's DNS or 127.0.0.1
IP Home? Do I need it?
Local Host? Do I need it?
Do I tick allow relay? Do I need it?
Local Domains? Do I need it?
SMTP Authentication? Do I need it?
If I need it, lets assume that my email address is "email@example.com" where do I put that info?

Cheers

Mail Server v1.0.5.8

Mail Server

  • Mailbags now have an option to accept mail only when specified server is down - will help to fight with spam which attempt to deliver mail bypassing the main server;
  • When delivering mail, if main exchanger returns 4xx reply (temporary problem), the server will not try other exchangers, will retry later the main exchanger;
  • Server options moved from registry to a XML file. 64 bit versions of Vista and 2008 server appear to be having access rights problems to the Windows registry, and the change will make our server more compatible with 64 bit versions;

  • Fixed couple of problems, which were showing when SQL server was set up to use case sensitive SQL statements;
  • Made changes in the remoting interface to allow logging in using aliases;
