I am assuming that you have a static IP address? If so, you need to have your ISP (the folks who own the IP address) set up the reverse DNS entry on that IP address. The reverse DNS entry should match the domain name for that IP address.. In other words, if you have created mail.abcabc.com as pointing to that IP address, they should make the reverse DNS entry mail.abcabc.com... That way, when you look up the IP address you get mail.abcabc.com, and when you resolve mail.abcabc.com, it matches that IP address... I assume your MX record points to mail.abcabc.com (in this example)..

Make sense?

Matt,

I believe the Reverse PTR has to only exists, it does not have to match the domain name. For example, ArGoStuff and several other sites I host all use the same IP but the reverse PTR record does not have any of my domain names in it.  At least that has been my experience.

You can see if you have a reverse PTR record by using NSLOOKUP and your IP address.  The bold red below is my IP address.  The bold blue is my reverse PTR record.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>nslookup
Default Server:  destiny.tcc.dom
Address:  192.168.1.14

> set type=ptr
> 216.179.41.27
Server:  destiny.tcc.dom
Address:  192.168.1.14

27.41.179.216.in-addr.arpa      name = ip216-179-41-27.cust.bestweb.net
41.179.216.in-addr.arpa nameserver = ns1.bestweb.net
41.179.216.in-addr.arpa nameserver = ns2.bestweb.net
ns1.bestweb.net internet address = 209.94.102.55
ns2.bestweb.net internet address = 209.94.102.57

Steve: Normally, that would be sufficient... I have one client's email server that requires that the reverse PTR be able to be resolved to the same IP address.....(in other words, mail.abcabc.com points to 111.111.111.111 and 111.111.111.111 has a reverse entry of mail.abcabc.com)... It caused us tremendous grief for a bit..

Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I run the command steve gave me and this is what I got
nslookup
server: smtu
address: 12.127.16.68 <<< this is my DNS provided by my ISP
When I entered
set type=ptr
my server address
I got the following err message
smtu cant find .......... : server failed
I have another server on dynamic ip address that work fine no problem. What is the different ?
my MX record point to my IP address not to the domain name.
I contact my ISP and explain the issue they told me that it is something in my mx record that is not correct, as i mention above I have another server that running on dynamic ip and I use the same DNS server in the setting so my questing is why the dynamic IP can resolve the connection to mail.comcast.net and the static is not ? Like I say it the only domain I'm unable to send email to I able to receive but I can not send.

Please advice ?

Thank you
Eli

P.s.

I did a check on AOL and I was able to send email to AOL account and complete a successful connection with their server, AOL will not let you email to their accounts if you do not have reverse DNS setup correctly, so I guess my reverse DNS are ok. OR maybe I missing something here ???

Eli,

Remember that the Reverse DNS is not of your Domain Name, but of your IP address.

Maybe if you provide your domiain name I can dig a little bit deeper, at thie point I am at a loss, and working with limited information to troubleshoot this.

Mail Server v1.0.5.9

Mail Server

  • Added additonal tracking of connections for SMTP and POP3: if they stay on for over 30 minutes, they are getting disconnected;
  • Fixed a problem with mailbags when they accept mail only when main server is down: in case of timeout mailbags were still treating the main server as "available" and rejecting mail;
  • Changed color coding of logs. Now red denotes only errors, delivery is green, POP3, SMTP, IMAP connections - blue;

Web Interface

  • Fixed a problem, when session timeouts were causing errors in the windows system logs;

Mail Server v1.0.5.8

Mail Server

  • Mailbags now have an option to accept mail only when specified server is down - will help to fight with spam which attempt to deliver mail bypassing the main server;
  • When delivering mail, if main exchanger returns 4xx reply (temporary problem), the server will not try other exchangers, will retry later the main exchanger;
  • Server options moved from registry to a XML file. 64 bit versions of Vista and 2008 server appear to be having access rights problems to the Windows registry, and the change will make our server more compatible with 64 bit versions;
  • Added an option to specify the number of lines on the log screen, when using the user interface. Was causing memory problems if left running for long time;
  • Fixed couple of problems, which were showing when SQL server was set up to use case sensitive SQL statements;
  • Made changes in the remoting interface to allow logging in using aliases;

Web Interface

  • Made changes to allow logging in using aliases;
  • When viewing folders, web interface now displays the name of logged in user;
