What is the correct procedure to move users and program configuration to a new server?

The instructions for doing this with the non-dot-net version (previous version) are available on the Argosoft website, and are faiely simple, however I cannot find anything describing this for the dot-net version.

I was able to move my domains and users across to the dot-net version from the previous version without any great hassle (hint - run maintenance before exporting your users in the previous version, it can save a bunch of time) and have had the dot-net version running for a week. Unfortunately, the computer is a bit old and slow, so I have purchased a new computer running Windows 2008 server. I have been able to install eWall and Mail Server.Net, and everything works OK.

I then tried to use a similar method to the one described for the previous version of MSPro - stopped all services on both computers then copied all the files, folders and sub folders from the working server to the new server. On restart of the MailServer.Net program, it was unable to connect to the SQL database, and hence failed to operate correctly. I abandoned the process and am still using the older, slower server for the time being.

It seems that main problem was the MS SQL database - the rest of the files in the _users sub-folder, for example, seem to work the same way as with the previous version.

Can anyone assist with an appropriate method to achieve this? It might be a useful procedure to end up on the Argosoft site under the FAQ for the dot-net version.

Thanks for that. Is this a new addition on the Argosoft page, or was I just blind when I looked over the last few days?

I'm not sure. I passed it along to Arche and he gave me the link. To be honest I forgot to check first.. which is something I usually do before asking Archie.

I can confirm that this procedure works well. All server settings, user mailboxes and outgoing mail copied across OK. The only part that does not seem to be moved on first inspection are the per-user statistics, which is not an issue for my purposes.

I'm getting the following error when I attempt to use the databackup function:

Starting database backup
Error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the o
peration or the server is not responding.
The backup or restore was aborted.

Let's start with the basics:
What version of ArGo are you using?
What OS?
Which Database (SQLExpress or the Full SQL Server Version)?
Are you logged in as Administrator?

Hmmm, I ran the tool on my db and it did work. Did you stop the ArGo Service before trying to backup?
Do you have any other load on the SQL server?

How about an AntiVirus program.. Try disabling that and trying again.

The tool won't run unless you stop the ArGo service (it prompts you to stop the server before continuing), so yes, I did stop it.

The only other load n the SQL server is Paranoid. I've stopped the Paranoid service and disabled the virus scanner, still with the same reults.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have contacted Archie on this. This suggestion is to restart the SQL Server and try again. He/we could not figure out why it would be timing out. The rest of the backup routine is file copying.

Still no luck...

I've ended up manually copying and backing up the Databases and attaching and restoring them on the new computer.

Sorry you had to go that route. Does the backup routine work on the new computer?

Mail Server v1.0.5.8

Mail Server

  • Mailbags now have an option to accept mail only when specified server is down - will help to fight with spam which attempt to deliver mail bypassing the main server;
  • When delivering mail, if main exchanger returns 4xx reply (temporary problem), the server will not try other exchangers, will retry later the main exchanger;
  • Server options moved from registry to a XML file. 64 bit versions of Vista and 2008 server appear to be having access rights problems to the Windows registry, and the change will make our server more compatible with 64 bit versions;
  • Added an option to specify the number of lines on the log screen, when using the user interface. Was causing memory problems if left running for long time;
  • Fixed couple of problems, which were showing when SQL server was set up to use case sensitive SQL statements;
  • Made changes in the remoting interface to allow logging in using aliases;

Web Interface

  • Made changes to allow logging in using aliases;
  • When viewing folders, web interface now displays the name of logged in user;

FTP Server v1.0.1.6
  • Server settings have been moved from registry to the XML file, which will be located in the common application data directory. 64 bit versions of Windows were having trouble writing into the registry; similar change is coming to the mail server;
  • If used, XML files (Users.XML, Groups.XML and ServerOptions.XML) will also be moved to the common application data directory;

FTP Server v1.0.1.5
  • When performing active data transfers on systems with multiple IP addresses, data connections were using first available IP address, rather than one on which the control connection was active. It was causing confusion with firewalls and routers;

Web Mail Hosting

I am considering to start web mail hosting service for ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET: mail server will be installed on your computer, while the web interface - on ours. It will save the hassle with setting up the web interface, and keep updating it.

Please vote here wheter you are interested in such a service.

ArGoSoft Mail Server .NET v1.0.5.7

Mail Server

  • Added Bounced Messages under Options, allowing users to customize bounced and warning messages.  This feature was present in the Pro version, but was missing in the .NET;
  • Now it is possible to set a daily limit for each user for sending mail out (see Max Rcpt To... option when editing users);
  • Each session can have a limit of RCPT TO commands Options - Server Settings - General . This feature was present in the Pro version, but was missing in the .NET.
  • Now allowing to specify the lifetime for remoting validation token, can be useful to extend the length of web interface sessions (Options - Server Options - Advanced);

Web Interface

  • Fixed Unable to Find Users Path... exceptions problem when accessing users for very first time;
  • Updated to allow the domain group administrator to update Max Rcpt To commands (see above);
